CRISPR Chip Names the Bacteria Behind Hard-to-Diagnose Lung Infections in Hours, Not Weeks

Tulane and UNC researchers built CANDI, a CRISPR microfluidic chip that identifies 15 nontuberculous mycobacteria species from patient samples in about 3.5 hours, work that culture tests need four to six weeks to do. In 230 clinical samples it matched the right species 97.3% of the time, which means patients can start the right treatment far sooner.
